ROAD SAFETY TIPS
Check the vehicle first before driving off.
Make it a habit to always walk around your vehicle to check vital parts before driving off. Look for signs of leaks around the brakes and check the brake fluid, check the headlights, tail lights, turn signal indicators and stop lamps, check the oil level and the water levels at the radiator coolant and the windshield washer reservoirs, ensure there is sufficient fuel for the trip, check the wipers, and the tire pressure and their individual conditions. Lastly, make sure the car is clean so it won’t only be presentable but easy to drive as well.
Check yourself before driving off.
Before you drive, make sure you are fit to drive. If you are undergoing some sort of medical treatment, some medicines may contain anti-histamine or phenylprophenolamine hydrochloride or chlophemiramine maleate that could make you drowsy or sleepy. If you have a severe case of allergies, you may be distracted or your faculties impaired because of the itchy sensation. And never, ever drive if you’ve had too much to drink.
Fasten your seatbelt.
Not only will fastening your seatbelts save your life, it could also save you some money. It is now mandatory to wear seatbelts while driving and when you are flagged down for not wearing one, the penalty can be quite substantial.
Drive defensively.
Always maintain a two-second distance behind the car in front of you. Anticipate the movement of other drivers. Let the other guy pass. Driving defensively will avoid unnecessary stress and will solicit a more relaxed drive.
Observe road, traffic signs and advisory.
Road signs and traffic signs are there for a purpose, not just for decorations. Caution signs are shaped triangularly and have red borders; instruction signs are shaped round, octagonal or as an inverted triangle with red color or borders, information signs and round or rectangular signs colored white with blue background; direction signs are those round ones with white on blue backgrounds. Refer to these signs and drive safely!
